Fishing for Piranha in the Amazon

10 March 2010 Yazan: Paris
Kategori: Hotels - Motels - Travel

Is fishing for bass or trout in your local rivers or lakes getting a bit blasé? Perhaps you need to spice up your life a bit by venturing into the Amazon for a bit of adventure. Something exciting – something thrilling – something like the astounding yet fatally dangerous piranha.

Heading towards the Brazilian Amazon

piranhas!

Start your adventure by heading towards the Brazilian Amazon. From just about any Brazilian city near the Amazon River you can find a tour guide or boat willing to take you out on a fishing excursion. Don’t go onto the river without a guide as doing so could prove dangerous and fatal – especially if you get lost in the jungle or encounter some type of plant or wildlife you just aren’t familiar with.

Your guide will prove an invaluable source of information, offering you information about what foods are safe to eat (if you aren’t provided food as part of your excursion) and how each plant can be used. Did you know, for example, that the branch of the leanna holds potable water? The inside bark of the carapanauba tree can be brewed into a tea that will help relieve the symptoms of malaria. The plant life in the Amazon is full of mysterious secrets.

Searching for Piranhas

Piranha!

Piranhas are tiny little fish from the omnivorous freshwater fish family. These fish have a biting reputation, known for their razor sharp teeth and startling appetite for fresh meat. There are currently more than 35 different species of Piranha in existence. Most live in the Amazon basis, in only a handful of river systems. The best places to find them are in the Guyanas, Paraguay-Parana, Sao Francisco River, and Orinoco.

You may occasionally find a piranha in a cold water river in the United States but they are few and far between. They are only there because those raised for aquariums are sometimes released into the waters and most die when they encounter their first cold winter.

Piranha 2

The average piranha is about 6 to 10 inches long, although some claim to have seen them as large as 18 inches in length. Each jaw houses a row of very sharp teeth, lined together tightly and able to interlock to rip, puncture, and shear the flesh of their victims.

How to Catch a Piranha

Piranha bites other fish ... ouch!

Catching a piranha is very easy and the decadent treat you’ll eat for lunch or dinner after making your catch is well worth the effort. The real work is in getting to the waters where the piranhas live. It usually takes a day or two by boat to reach the right waters but the trip is not for naught as you’ll be amazed by the other creatures you see in the water on the way – especially the pink dolphin.

An Amazon River Pink Dolphin

To catch a piranha you must merely attract him to your boat. Unlike many other aquatic species, the piranha is attracted by noise and splashing water because, to them, the commotion means there is a creature in distress – a creature that can easily be taken advantage of. Once they’re attracted to your boat, drop the bloodiest fresh meat you can into the water. You’ll have no problem spearing or hooking your piranha once it is attracted to the blood and your tour guide will help you to safely bring the fish on board.

Piranha hiss, growl, and snap when faced with danger. Keep your fingers, and the rest of your flesh, away from their mouths at all times.

Considerations before Visiting the Amazon

Piranha

Make sure you let your physician know you are planning a trip to the Amazon. You may or may not need to take anti-malaria medications before you go and your doctor will likely give you a prescription for medication to carry with you during your trip as well.

Piranha teeth

You might want to carry a relatively comprehensive first aid kid, too. If you have an encounter with a Piranha you may not be able to get back to seek medical attention for a cut or puncture wound for an extended period of time.

Make sure you book a stay in a Rio de Janeiro hotel, or anywhere else in Brazil, for a few days after your fishing excursion. You’ll appreciate the time to explore the rest of the country and to simply relax after a fun and exciting adventure in the Amazon!

10 Must-See Attractions in Corsica

09 March 2010 Yazan: Paris
Kategori: Hotels - Motels - Travel

The French region and territorial collectivity of Corsica is easily one of the most culturally distinct and vibrant destinations in Europe. For much of the outside world, the island north of Sardinia is indelible as the birth home of Napoleon Bonaparte. While that is indeed Corsica’s claim to fame, as a pure vacation spot, the superb Mediterranean gem is notable for countless other characteristics as well.

From the UNESCO World Heritage Scandola Nature Reserve to remote, hilly and historic towns, Corsica is awash with spectacular points of interest. The island may not boast a typical array of beach resorts in the mold of nearby Sardinia or yet, the Côte d’Azur, but nonetheless, Corsica has more than 1,000 km of coastline to explore. As a result, one can conveniently hop from sea to beach to mountain summit and wildlife-rich forest in a single afternoon. Corsica’s star attraction however, is a deep cultural legacy most evident in these ten remarkable towns.

10. Ajaccio

The capital of Corsica is the de facto gateway of the island department. Home to more than 50,000 people, Ajaccio is a small yet vibrant city. Vital landmarks include the birth home of Napoleon Bonaparte, late 16th century Ajaccio Cathedral and a triumvirate of Genoese towers.

9. Porto-Vecchio

The small seaport of Porto-Vecchio is a popular summer retreat. The commune’s population soars fivefold in July and August, with the marina a foremost hive of activity. Of particular interest however, is a network of Bronze Age ruins scattered among the rocky hillsides that border the town.

8. Sartène

A mere 60 km west of Porto-Vecchio, Sartène is a picturesque village with medieval roots. The diminutive commune has a gorgeous townscape, with myriad narrow streets and beautiful little squares to explore. Throw in a notable wine and culinary heritage and Sartène is a first-rate destination in Corsica.

7. Calvi

The persistent tale that Christopher Columbus was born in Calvi is the Haute-Corse commune’s legendary claim to fame. Like many other towns on the island, a hillside outcrop of heritage landmarks provides Calvi with a memorable, postcard-worthy face.

6. Saint-Florent

The Patrimonio vineyards of Corsica have a mythical reputation in oenophile circles. Visitors to the island who want to explore the first-rate viticulture of the region usually rely on the pretty fishing port of Saint-Florent as a base. In addition to a 15th century Genoese fortress and remarkable Romanesque cathedral, the town is home to a superb and relatively unspoiled local beach.

5. Ota

Ota is one of the veritable gems of Corsica. The tiny village has one of the most enviable backdrops of any commune on the island. Don’t skip it: photogenic Ota is brilliant, especially if you have a decent camera.

4. Bonifacio

Bonifacio’s location on the Mediterranean Sea, across the Strait of Bonifacio from Sardinia, is noteworthy. The commune is the southernmost in France but perhaps most incredibly, has been strategically important since the late Mesolithic period. There are many wonderful treasures on hand in this small Corsican town.

3. Bastia

Bastia’s marina bustles in the busy summer tourist season and the commune’s remarkable wines flow freely at al fresco tables in the old port district. Home to more than 40,000 people, the small city has many fine points of interest.

2. Corte

Once the capital of Corsica, Corte is another significant island gem. From above, the town is a handsome collection of terracotta rooftops, plunked down in the middle of lush hillside forests. Corte is accessible from Ajaccio and Bastia by rail.

1. Cargèse

Supreme natural beauty has made Cargèse a settlement area for well over 2,000 years. The town on Corsica’s west coast has less than 1,000 inhabitants but boasts a wide range of attractions, both man-made and natural.

With a total number of 18 parks and gardens, covering an area over 140 hectares, it’s no wonder Perth is most often described as a parkland oasis of Australia.
